18 months for flight from lawful custody

A 33-year-old man was sentenced to eighteen months imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to a charge of escape from lawful custody.

Benny Simons of 33 Leopold Street, Werk-en-Rust told Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle that he was tired of the police harassing him and so he attempted to escape.

According to prosecutor Sherwin Mathews, on May 22 Simon made an appearance at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court and he was remanded  by Magistrate Fazil Azeez on a charge of break and enter.

When he was being taken to the Camp Street prison he jumped out the window of the prison bus in the vicinity of Princes Street.

He was rearrested by ranks from Brickdam and the charge was instituted against him.

Simon said that he admitted to what the prosecutor related but he only did it because he was “fed up and disgust with the police.” “Only last week you put me on $20,000 bail and soon as I come out they put me back in jail,” Simon lamented to the magistrate.
