Three days after an acid attack, Gomattie Singh was yesterday flown to neighbouring Trinidad for advanced medical care in an effort to save one of her eyes which was severely damaged.
Her departure was confirmed by attorney-at-law Khemraj Ramjattan last evening. According to the Alliance for Change (AFC) leader, Singh left yesterday morning for the Mount Hope Hospital in Trinidad where she will undergo surgery.
Stabroek News was unable to contact Singh’s relatives yesterday.
Following Wednesday’s attack, Singh was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the St. Joseph Mercy hospital where she was fully conscious but in pain.
The woman’s husband Krishna had told this newspaper on Thursday that the doctor told him that she was in danger of losing her eye.
He said too that her face was badly burnt and she was not eating.
An eyewitness had recounted to this newspaper that just after 4 pm a light blue car bearing an HB number plate stopped a short distance from Singh’s car which was parked near outside the Guyoil gas station on Sheriff Street.
A young man got out of the vehicle and started heading towards Singh. He had a black bag in his hand and as he neared the Rav 4 the man pulled out a bottle with an orange liquid and threw it into the woman’s face.
The eyewitness told Stabroek News that following the incident, the woman was placed in another vehicle and rushed to the hospital.
The seat that Singh was sitting in was burnt badly and her glasses were lying there too, the witness said. The information this newspaper received is that the man calmly returned to the car that he arrived in and it sped off. Krishna and the grandson were not injured in the attack.
Police are said to be investigating the matter but no arrests have since been made.
