West Coast butcher robbed

Early yesterday morning two armed men robbed a Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara butcher of approximately $1 million in cash and jewelry.

Sadiq Sakawat left the security of his house to use the outhouse at approximately 12:30 am yesterday morning and was then confronted by two men who were armed with handguns, a police source said.
The bandits forced Sakawat back into his house and demanded cash and jewelry from him. The man’s wife and children were home at the time of the attack.

The armed men carted off $300,000 worth of jewelry and $880,000 in cash. Sakawat and his family were tied up by the bandits before they escaped.

A report was subsequently made to the police who immediately launched an investigation. One person is in police custody for the robbery, the police source said, and investigations are continuing.
