Fruit vendor chopped on Bourda mall

A 35-year-old fruit vendor was up to last night receiving treatment at the GPHC after he was chopped several times by a man known to him.

Troy Bacchus of 2 ‘South Section’ Canal # 2 was chopped at the back of his neck, across his face and his hands while he was packing up fruits at the back off his stall on the Bourda mall around 9:30 last night.

Bacchus’s wife Hansmattie Pooran told Stabroek News that she was sitting at the front of their stall when she heard her husband holler. She said that the man who is known to them as “Country” apparently crept up quietly to her husband and started “firing chops,” with a cutlass. She said that her husband managed to run away and “Country” then escaped.  Pooran related that she flagged a passing taxi and took her husband to the hospital.

Bacchus mother Salote Samuels said that the incident may have stemmed from a misunderstanding the two men had in the past over a gold chain. Up to press time Bacchus was still receiving treatment in the accident and emergency unit of the GPHC.
