The Indian Arrival Committee (IAC) has written the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) complaining about a cartoon in the Sunday Stabroek of June 15.

In a letter dated June 16 to Chairman of the ERC Juan Edghill, the IAC said that the cartoon was racially offensive and denigrating to persons of Indo-Guyanese origin. The IAC called on the ERC to deal with the matter expeditiously. The letter was signed by IAC executive member, Evan Radhay Persaud Misra.

The cartoon in question depicts an elderly Indo-Guyanese woman being asked how she felt about a black man being President of the United States.

Stabroek News Editor Anand Persaud said the newspaper completely rejected the IAC’s assertions. The ERC has since written Stabroek News for a response to the IAC complaint and the newspaper has replied to it.
