The PPP yesterday expressed its support of  the call by many African leaders for free and fair elections in Zimbabwe, stating that it is  the only path to recovery in that country.

The ruling party in a press release said it is deeply  concerned  over the situation in  Zimbabwe with the government of Robert Mugabe  being involved in violating the fundamental human rights of the people.

The massive  rigging of the elections, the PPP noted, could not hide the fact that the opposition Movement for Democratic Change had obtained more votes than the ruling ZAMU-PF party, but  the rigging  was enough to force a run off elections for the Presidency.

“Now the ruling party has unleashed a reign of violence against opposition members and supporters. This is clearly to create conditions for the ZANU-PF to once again seize power by force and fraud,” the PPP  declared.

Meanwhile, the party added,   masses of Zimbabweans  have been enduring great hardships as the “inflation rates have risen to the stratosphere, unemployment affects most of the population  and shortages of almost all items are all pervasive.”
