The Saraswati Vidya Niketan (SVN) said a third student from its West Coast Demerara school has been awarded a scholarship to study at her chosen college in the US.

Natasha PersaudIn a press release SVN said Natasha Persaud graduated in 2006 with eight subjects at CXC including six grade ones. The support for the scholarship has been available since last year but Persaud was required to serve the SVN for one year before taking up the offer. She will be pursuing a degree in Early Childhood Education at York College –CUNY in the Fall.

The SVN said all its scholarships are granted on the condition that the recipients return to Guyana to serve the school for a minimum of five years. It said this was one of the conditions of the agreement signed by the SVN, the student and his/her guardian. Support for the scholarship comes in part from the school which will provide the airfare, while tuition and boarding has been guaranteed by a US-based couple who are acquainted with and support the SVN.

Persaud was the first pupil to enrol at the SVN in 2001 when the school started with 15 students.
