A trip by a family to Linden yesterday afternoon to attend the funeral of a loved one turned deadly when the car they were in lost control on the Linden-Soesdyke Highway and toppled several times, killing the driver and seriously injuring the other occupants.

Dead is Lindon Phillips of 38 Friendship, East Coast Demerara. He, his wife Marcy Phillips, his daughter Donelle Phillips, sister-in-law Margot Bobb and her daughter Okel Bobb were in the vehicle when the accident  occurred some time before 4 pm yesterday.

This newspaper understands that Phillips’s Toyota 212 car might have developed problems with one of its wheels suddenly and he lost control of the vehicle, which then toppled several times.

Relatives at the hospital last evening could barely contain themselves after hearing the news of Phillips’s death.

One relative said he learnt that the accident occurred somewhere in the vicinity of the entrance to the GDF’s Camp Soweyo.

The family was rescued by a man and his wife who placed them in a pick-up and transported them to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where Phillips was pronounced dead on arrival.

The other occupants of the car were listed as stable up to press time but with serious injuries.
