A 36-year-old man, who was walking on the New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop public road died after being struck by a car, which drove away after the incident late Saturday night. 

Aman Alli of Vreed-en-Hoop was pronounced dead on arrival at the West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH), to which he had been taken after the incident which occurred at about 11 pm on Saturday. The driver of the car suspected to have been involved in the incident has since been arrested, after being turned in by his father.

A police press release stated that investigations revealed that Alli was walking along the roadway when he was struck down by a motor vehicle which drove away from the scene. Public-spirited citizens took the man to the WDRH where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police said that subsequent investigations led to the arrest of the driver of motor car PLL 2330, who was brought in to the police by his father. The man is in custody and the vehicle has been detained.

Meanwhile at about 2:25 yesterday morning the body of 32-year-old Edward Lewis of Herstelling, East Bank Demerara (EBD) was found on the public road at Providence, EBD, with injuries to his left side head and a suspected broken left arm.

The body is at the Lyken Funeral Parlour awaiting a post-mortem examination, police said.
