‘Wife-beater’ shot in thigh

A 38-year-old man, who was beating his wife and then allegedly resisted arrest, was shot in his thigh but is now in police custody in Berbice.

Yadram Bhopaul of Betsy Ground, East Canje, Berbice was shot in his left thigh by the rank, who was responding to a report of assault causing actual bodily harm received at the Reliance Police Station, a police press release stated.

The incident occurred at 2:45 pm yesterday. Police said that investigations revealed that upon arriving at the scene at Betsy Ground, the policeman saw Bhopaul beating his 39-year-old wife Irene Chatura with a piece of wood. The rank intervened and attempted to arrest Bhopaul who chucked the policeman and held on to his neck while attempting to disarm him, the statement said. “The rank then drew his service revolver and discharged a round which struck Bhopaul to his left thigh”, it added.

Bhopaul was taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he was treated and sent away and is now in police custody. The piece of wood used in the attack on his wife has been recovered, the police said.
