Bartica consumers owe GWI $106M -CEO

In an effort to boost its revenue collection at Bartica Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) CEO Karan Singh and a team visited the area to review how the community’s water system is being managed since residents owe the company about $106M.

According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release the team visited the water treatment plant and intake station and met with residents of the Four Miles Housing Scheme. Singh said he was disturbed about how the water system is managed in the Region Seven community as residents have tampered with, removed and illegally reconnected water meters to the GWI system. He said these persons will face legal action. He said too the company will intensify its revenue collection campaign to collect outstanding sums.

Meanwhile, residents highlighted concerns about the water system including infrequent supply. In response, Singh assured residents that an engineer from GWI will visit the area to provide technical assistance and to improve the level of service. He said too the Regional Office has explored the possibility of drilling a well and soil testing will be conducted to determine whether an aquifer can be set up to produce ground water to supplement the quantity being supplied from Bartica to residents of Four Miles. “If we can harness a well, we can interlink the feedback into the Bartica system which can serve as an improvement for both Bartica and the residents of 4 miles,” he said.

The CEO said too that in a few months he will meet with regional authorities and the Neighbourhood Democratic Council to work with them on improving water efficiency in Bartica.
