Alan Robert Gates, also known as Clive De Nobrega, who was wanted by police, was placed on $425,000 bail when he appeared before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court early last week. Gates allegedly obtained $4.1 million by pretending to be the director of a company.

Gates, 51, of East Ruimveldt pleaded not guilty to five charges of obtaining money by false pretence.
It is alleged that on the following dates at New Amsterdam, Berbice the accused obtained the amounts of monies stated below from Wajeden Bacchus by purporting to be the director of an import and export business: May 7, 2006 – $300,000; May 11 and 13, and October 5 of last year – $1M, $1M and $1.2M, respectively; and June 5 of this year – $600,000

Attorney-at-law Euclin Gomes represented the accused in the matters and his application for bail was accepted.
Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle granted Gates bail in the sum of $85,000 on each charge. Gates will next appear before the court on September 8.

Police had issued a wanted bulletin for Gates for allegedly obtaining money by false pretence.
Gates had responded to the wanted bulletin by the police by informing them that he would appear before them in the company of his lawyer.

He had told this newspaper that he felt the police had “vindictively” issued a wanted bulletin for him because he was very critical about their intelligence gathering capacity, among other things, on a local television programme.
