Rupununi bridge caves in under excavator

This bridge in the Rupununi collapsed under the weight of this excavator which was heading to a mining operation in the South Rupununi recently.

The bridge, which is a major link between Lethem and the Amerindian villages in the Deep South Rupununi is close to the Amerindian village of Katoonarib. Reports out of the area state that the bridge was only recently completed and heavy duty machinery had crossed to get to the mining operation.

Recent heavy rains there have flooded the area compounding transportation problems in the region. Several hinterland villages have complained recently about a range problems related to mining. The damage to the bridge was revealed in a letter in yesterday’s Stabroek News. There has been no word from Region Nine or the government about it.
