Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) Registrar Dr Didacus Jules on Friday paid a courtesy call on President Bharrat Jagdeo where discussions centred on CXC’s role and changing the perception of the exams.

Commenting on his meeting with the President, Jules said among the topics discussed was the strategic plan for CXC and repositioning CXC to take the Council to the next level. A Government Information Agency (GINA) press release quoted Jules as saying “The major challenge we face now is that of global competitiveness and we are seeking to ensure that we meet these challenges.” He said too the president was very supportive of the direction CXC has decided to take.

The registrar said too Jagdeo expressed concern that CXC is largely perceived to be “just an examination” and they discussed ways of changing this perception. He said CXC was more than an examination body “we serve as a quality assurance body in education and while our core business is assessment and the issuing of exams and accreditation, we also have the responsibility to held drive performance, improvement in the education system.” Jules said too as an exams body CXC has tremendous influence in the education system to assist in changing the syllabus, the content and focus of education and the Council intends to leverage that strength.

Meanwhile, as regard instances in the past where students were able to cheat while taking the exams, Jules said the Council “will always be working to upgrade the system and to completely redesign its security arrangements.”
