The Guyana Consumers’ Association has congratulated Minister of Health, Dr Leslie Ramsammy on his election to the presidency of the World Health Assembly and hailed his successes.

In a press release the Association said though consumer organisations “do not usually give encomiums to Ministers of Government” it felt it fitting to acknowledge Ramsammy as a “world-class Guyanese, and most important, as an encouragement and inspiration to the political and official establishment to serve the public with greater commitment.” Guyana and the rest of the Caribbean have rarely had a minister who has combined so outstanding an academic and professional profile such energy and revolutionary creativity, the group said.

Ramsammy’s works are too many to count, the release said though his work in HIV/AIDS and immunization programmes have been recognised both in the Caribbean and abroad. The minister has quietly built good hospitals throughout the country and has introduced procedures such as open heart surgery, kidney transplants and dialysis.

There is now a cancer clinic and a comprehensive medical laboratory is also now serving the public.

The Association said Ramsammy’s election not only brings honour and prestige to Guyana and the Caribbean but gives recognition to a truly outstanding man and minister of health. He was elected to the post in May.
