No sugar shortage – GuySuCo

The Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) says there is no sugar shortage and no increase in the price of sugar, in the wake of reports of rationing and overpricing of the commodity.

In a press release the Corporation said it continues to make adequate provisions for the continuous supply of sugar to the local market despite its export obligations and the slow start-up of its second crop due to heavy rainfall in July.

The Corporation said it is concerned about the reports it continues to receive about the rationing and overpricing of sugar when there is neither a decrease in its supply nor an increase in the price at which it sells the local market. GuySuCo said it is strongly against these practices and it urges its wholesalers not to exploit their consumers.

The Corporation said too that bagged sugar continues to be available in adequate quantities at all of its bagging estates; at Skeldon, Blairmont, Enmore and Uitvlugt. It said too its packaged sugar, Demerara Gold is also available.
