A 28-year-old man who allegedly robbed a woman of a quantity of jewellery was remanded to prison when he appeared before the George-town Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Wayne Kyte of James Street, Albouystown was not required to plead to the indictable charge of robbery under arms when it was read to him by Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton.
It is alleged that on March 1 last year Kyte robbed Solika Kandhoya of one gold chain and two gold rings together valued $62,000.
Attorney-at-law Adrian Thompson represented Kyte in the matter. According to him, the accused was in police custody previously and was placed on $10,000 station bail. He explained that after Kyte had posted bail he was required to report to the Brickdam Police Station at intervals.
Thompson further told the court that on one such occasion his client was told that a man, Junior Niles, had been arrested for the offence and he would no longer be required to report. Based on these statements the lawyer told the court that it was never a case where his client was hiding from the police.
The attorney told the court that since his client was previously on station bail and has a fixed address where he can be easily located then he should be granted bail.
Prosecutor Robert Clement objected to bail. According to Clement, the information presented to the court by the lawyer is not within the knowledge of the police or the prosecution.
Clement said that to their knowledge Kyte was never arrested but was in a “hideout” at Berbice for a time. The prosecutor told the court that he would not call the submission made by Thompson “inaccurate” but that the information was not available to the prosecution or the police.
Kyte was refused bail and his matter continues before Magistrate Hamilton on September 2.
