Rain dampens landfill fire

An intense shower last evening doused a fire which residents around the Lodge area said had been burning at the city landfill for the past two days.
Homestretch Avenue was shrouded in thick smoke last night forcing drivers to slow down, especially around the area of the National Cultural Centre. When Stabroek News arrived at the site a small fire was still steadily going with dark, thick smoke rising from it.
“It is dangerous,” one resident said. According to one woman, the area had been afire for two days and despite reports to the Fire Service nothing was done. “It’s a good thing the rain came,” she said.
