Three years jail for raiding ministry

A 40-year-old man who allegedly stole a quantity of computer components valued just over $700,000 from various government departments was jailed for three years on one of the charges after pleading guilty yesterday.

Trevor Headley was read five charges of break and enter and larceny by Magistrate Priya Beharry. He entered not guilty pleas on four of the charges and pleaded guilty to one.

It is alleged between May 8 and 9 and on August 12 the man broke and entered the accounts department and other areas of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stealing one computer monitor valued $47,000, one stabilizer valued $10,000 and one central processing unit valued $120,000. Further, it is alleged that on January 24 and April 8 Headley broke and entered the building of the National Insurance Scheme stealing four computer monitors worth $180,000 and $60,000 cash and four monitors valued $180,000.

Between May 30 and 31 Headley broke and entered the personnel department of the Ministry of Agriculture and stole two computer monitors and one keyboard together worth $120,000.

“Me and somebody else do it…dey ain’t find de other guy so is me alone they hold on pun,” Headley told the court. “I was de one inside passing it out. I just know he from de market,” the man further explained.

According to the prosecution the man’s fingerprints were recovered from the crime scenes.

The prosecution further objected to bail stating that there are other charges likely to be brought against Headley.

“I ain’t getting no work no way right now. I does walk and sell lil cigarette…this man say leh we go on this work,” Headley told the court. According to him it was a way to make “a lil money”.

Headley received a three-year sentence with regard to the Ministry of Agriculture matter. He will return to court on September 8 for the continuation of the other four matters.
