The prison officer who should have been keeping a close eye on the convicted prisoner who escaped from the New Amsterdam Hospital has been interdicted from duty pending an inquiry, reliable sources have informed this newspaper.

Up to press time last evening Lyndon Flavius, 22, of First Street, Bartica was still on the run and authorities had not received any information on his whereabouts.
Reports reaching Stabroek News are that around 2 am on Monday, Flavius successfully removed his foot cuffs and escaped from the building.

It is unclear how the man managed to free himself or whether he was seen leaving the premises by other patients or the nursing staff.

The prison officer who was guarding him had cuffed him to his bed and left to go to the lavatory.
Flavius, who was serving a three-year sentence for break and enter and larceny,  was hospitalized after a fight with another inmate at the New Amsterdam Prisons earlier.
He was scheduled to be released in 2010.
