Man denies chain snatching at exhibition site

A 30-year-old man was placed on $25,000 bail when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court accused of snatching a gold chain from a man at the Sophia Exhibition Centre.

Carlton Razack of 1056 Cummings Park, Sophia, pleaded not guilty to the larceny from the person charge when it was read to him by Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle. It is alleged that on August 29 at the Sophia Exhibition Centre Razack snatched a gold chain worth $65,000 from Johnson Fraser.

Razack denied the allegation.

He said he had gone to the centre to collect his children, whom he had sent to the Carifesta Grand Market.

He said he had not spent seven minutes there when two police officers accosted him and took him to the outpost. He was then taken to the police station where he remained until he was taken to court on Tuesday.

The man said that his children were left at the centre until one in the morning when their mother picked them up.

Fraser who was present in court told the magistrate that he was positive that Razack snatched his chain.
He said he was standing at the Banks beer stall watching some young men dance when he felt someone pull the chain. The clasp was at the front and so the person had to jerk hard, he said. When he spun around, he said, he saw Razack alone behind him.

He said that he “chuck” him twice and asked for his chain. He saw two police officers and told them of the incident upon which they arrested Razack.

Razack was placed on $25,000 bail and the matter continues on October 6.
