Wakenaam health centres meeting mandate

-doctor to be posted there soon
An assessment of the services provided at the Wakenaam Cottage Hospital and three health posts found that though they have been able to carry out their mandate, services can be boosted with a doctor posted at the hospital.

Minister in the Ministry of Health, Dr Bheri Ramsaran and a team comprising Director of Regional Health Services, Dr Kumarie Jaipersaud, Coordinator of Hinterland Affairs in the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, Harripersaud Nokta and Coordinator of Coastal Communities for Regional Health Services, Eulalie Bowen visited the Region Three institutions recently.

A press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) said the team’s objective was to determine what needs to be done to improve the quality of services offered at the centres.

It was noted that the hospital is delivering effective services to Wakenaam residents but Ramsaran said the ministry would explore the possibility of expanding its services. The hospital is manned by a medex while arrangements are in place for a doctor to be deployed to the island shortly.

Meanwhile, Jaipersaud said she was impressed with the standard of work done at the hospital especially since the workers have been able to meet the ministry’s targets for different programmes. At the same time, she said that a doctor posted at the institution would be of enormous benefit and would reduce the number of referrals to more advanced facilities.

Jairpersaud also noted that the institution will need equipment to boost its services, though it will take some time before this can happen.
GINA said too that Wakenaam’s health officials were commended for meeting 100 percent coverage in the vaccination programme. Children and babies are vaccinated at clinics which are held frequently.
