A young man who allegedly behaved in a disorderly manner while being arrested by a policeman was granted $20,000 bail by Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle when he appeared before her at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
Shawn Harris, 21, of 161 Garnett Street, Kitty, pleaded not guilty to the charges of behaving disorderly and resisting lawful apprehension.

It is alleged that on September 4 at Owen Street, Kitty, Harris behaved in a disorderly manner while being arrested by Constable Griffith.

Harris’s attorney stated that the police went outside the law by holding his client beyond 72 hours without charging him since Harris had been in police custody for six days.

He went on to say that if the prosecution did not present any evidence against his client, he would not take the police to court for breaching the law.

He said further that on the day in question his client had been assaulted by the policeman and Harris was resisting the assault and not the arrest. The defence attorney then applied for bail.

The prosecution made no objections to bail and the magistrate subsequently granted it and ordered Harris to return to court on September 24.
