Guard in custody after shooting intruder in back

A 40-year-old man was shot in the back by a security guard shortly after he reportedly jumped a fence and entered Fulton Court, a housing complex at the corner of Church and Irving streets.

The security guard up to late yesterday afternoon was still in police custody assisting with investigations while Paul Alexander, of no fixed place of abode, was undergoing treatment at the Georgetown Hospital.

Stabroek News understands that the incident occurred around 1 am and Alexander was fully conscious when he arrived at the medical institution about half an hour later. Though in pain, the man was asking for food and something to drink

After being seen by a doctor in the emergency room the man was sent to the operating theatre to have the bullet removed.

According to the information reaching this newspaper, the guard who is attached to a city security service told police that he was on duty when he was confronted by Alexander who was armed with a cutlass. He said that the man attacked him and he in turn fired a shot which hit Alexander in the lower back.
