50 for Cuba eye surgery

The ‘Miracle Mission’ programme between the Governments of Guyana and Cuba has been reinstated with 50 patients preparing to travel to the Spanish-speaking republic on September 23 for eye surgery.

According to a press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) on Tuesday, Minister in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran who disclosed the restart, stated that patients are currently being screened at the Diamond Diagnostic and Treatment Centre, East Bank Demerara, from Monday to Friday between 9 am and Midday. This will be run until the Port Mourant Ophthalmology Centre in Berbice is opened. Other screening  activities will be conducted at other health centres such as Leonora, Suddie and Mahaicony.

GINA said also that this programme was initiated in February 2006 following an agreement between President Bharrat Jagdeo and Cuba’s former President Fidel Castro and according to Ramsaran it has since been a great success.
