Murder/suicide at Oranapai

Brazilian miner shoots wife, kills self – reports

A Brazilian miner shot his wife dead on Tuesday at Oranapai, Mazaruni, before turning the weapon on himself.

It is unclear what may have transpired between the Brazilian couple leading up to the tragic end but up to late yesterday afternoon the team of police ranks who had ventured into the interior location had not yet returned.

This newspaper could not ascertain the identities of the victims. Reports reaching Stabroek News are that around 7 pm on Tuesday, the miner who has been living and working in Guyana for the past four years shot his wife with a shotgun at New Road, Oranapai, Region Seven before shooting himself. Police sources had told this newspaper that the bodies were to be flown to the city for post-mortem examinations but up to press time they had not arrived.

Senior police officers said that at the moment all they had were ‘preliminary reports’ and ranks were currently on the scene carrying out investigations.
