Bodies of murder/suicide couple flown to city

Recent domestic problems between a Brazilian miner and his reputed wife fuelled Tuesday night’s heated argument which ended tragically when the man stabbed and chopped his partner to death before shooting himself in the chest.

The victims have since been identified as Adinario Demira Ndo Brido, a 49-year-old miner/dredge owner and 38-year-old Irtaenildo Maria Leal De Arauge.

They are both Brazilian nationals who have been residing in Guyana for a number of years.

Yesterday their heavily wrapped bodies were transported to the city in an Air Services Limited (ASL) aircraft and are now lying at the Lyken’s Funeral parlour awaiting a post-mortem examination.

The police said yesterday that they were treating the incident which occurred at around 9:30 am on Tuesday as a murder/suicide.

Their investigations have so far revealed that Brito and De Arauge, his reputed wife, had an argument over an alleged triangular affair during which he allegedly stabbed her repeatedly about the body.

He then went outside of the mining camp, located at New Road, Middle Mazaruni and is suspected to have shot himself with an unlicensed shotgun which he had in his possession.

Both parties succumbed to the injuries sustained, the police said adding that a unlicensed 12-gauge shotgun along with a spent cartridge and a knife believed to have been used to inflict the injuries to the woman, have since been recovered.

Several persons around the camp, this newspaper was told have confirmed that the couple was arguing and it was during this time that the woman was stabbed.

Police sources have since told Stabroek News that the businessman has been having financial problems with his dredge for over a month now coupled with domestic issues concerning his reputed wife.

Reports are that on Tuesday things escalated when an argument erupted between the couple and it was during this time that Brito picked up a huge knife, resembling a machete, stabbing and chopping her several times about the body, concentrating his attack on her head, chest and arms.

After he had hacked her to death, he ran into a clump of bushes behind his camp and shot himself in the chest with a shot gun.

The matter was subsequently reported to the police but they were unable to venture to the scene because of heavy rainfall in that part of the region.

Stabroek News understands that the bodies were wrapped and ferried up the Mazaruni River to a place called Olive Creek were they were subsequently picked up by an aircraft and flown to Ogle Aerodrome, arriving just after 3 pm yesterday.
