The woman and the girls had hired a taxi from the Stabroek Market to transport them to a wedding reception at the army base. Tameica Damon related that her grandmother was joking about the good time they would have celebrating there.

“We were driving along a lil fast,” Damon said in a quivering voice, “…next thing I know another car come speeding towards us from the opposite direction and de driver panic.” Damon explained that the taxi driver then tried to avoid a head-on collision, swerved and smashed into a lamp-post at the side of the road.

The teenager was unable to give any more details; however, she repeatedly said that the driver had removed her grandmother from the car and left her lying on the grass. “He put she deh and all he do was say, ‘Lady don’t dead on me hay,’” Damon recounted.

When Stabroek News arrived at the Georgetown Public Hospital around 10.20pm Damon, her cousin OlisiaWharton who was also in the car and other relatives were seen exiting the Emergency Room sobbing and holding on to each other.

Wharton told this newspaper that a stranger had taken them to the hospital at approximately 8.50pm. “We never expect this… she was still alive… I don’t know how…” she whispered.
