Prashad meets Venezuelan diaspora group

Representatives of the Guyanese Community in Venezuela met Minister of Tourism, Industry and Com-merce, Manniram Prashad, on Friday, to discuss ways in which the Guyanese diaspora in that country could be assisted.

According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release, members of the organisation related that their purpose for visiting Guyana was to promote their work and obtain support for it on behalf of the diaspora in Venezuela and to explore possibilities for linkages with relevant organizations.
The organization has been active for the last two years and has represented Guyanese interests by addressing issues such as lack of documentation, employment opportunities and access to proper education. It has also promoted the welfare of Guyanese by providing social, cultural and sports activities, and humanitarian assistance. The group receives support from Venezuelan government officials and Congresswoman Weky Silva Yury was part of the visiting delegation.

The press release said Prashad commended the work of the group saying, “We are happy to see in the diaspora, second generation Guyanese taking this kind of responsibility…”

He told them too that when they returned to Venezuela, they could assure Guyanese that they were welcome to return home.
