Bandits flee patrol after robbing Esso on Regent St

A guard was gun butted and the cashier at the Esso Gas Station’s supermarket on Regent Street robbed of cash on Sunday night by two bandits who tossed away their weapon after they spotted the police.

Police in a release yesterday said they were investigating the armed robbery, which occurred around 10.10 pm at Regent and King streets.

During the incident, cashier Ualdien Fraser was attacked and robbed by two men, one of whom was armed with a handgun.

The release stated that investigations have revealed that the two bandits entered the supermarket section, held the cashier at gunpoint and took away $5,000 and a cell phone. Security guard Lennox Batson who was near the door leading to the supermarket was struck to his head with the firearm.

As the perpetrators were leaving the gas station, a mobile police patrol was passing and as the two men escaped along King Street, they tossed away the firearm.

The unlicensed .32 Taurus pistol and two matching rounds were recovered by the police.
Last Tuesday, two bandits, one of whom was armed with a handgun held up two attendants at the Texaco Filling Station on Mandela Avenue and fled with some $9,000 in cash.

This newspaper was told that the attendants were on duty around 11.30 pm when two men went into the gas station.

One of them pulled out a gun and demanded that the attendants hand over the cash they had. After being given a small amount of cash, which represented sales for the night, the bandits fled the scene on foot.
No one has since been held in connection with this robbery.
