Mattress leads to remand

Magistrate Fazil Azeez yesterday remanded to prison a man charged with breaking and entering a house and stealing items worth over $100,000 when he appeared at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court.

Mustak Ali, 27, of Phoenix Park, West Bank Demerara pleaded not guilty to the charge of break and enter and larceny and was remanded to prison by the magistrate.

It is alleged that between August and September 2008 at Phoenix Park, the accused broke and entered the dwelling of Kim Spencer and stole a comfort sleep mattress, a carpet, rugs, utensils, a spade, a shovel all valued at $119,000, the property of Spencer.

Spencer told the court that she was in Lethem when the incident occurred. She stated that she was constructing a house on the lot but there was a shack there which housed the items. A neighbour reportedly saw as the defendant was removing the items and another resident yesterday told the court that Ali had attempted to sell her the mattress.

He was remanded and will return to court on October 27 at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court.
