Free medical checkups for Berbicians

Free medical checkups will be available to Berbicians all this week, compliments of the Organization for Social and Health Advancement for Guyana/Caribbean (OSHAG).

One of the organizers, Carol Trim, told Stabroek News that the team which visited Guyana three years ago is collaborating with an orthopaedic specialist and Dr Vishwa Mahadeo of the New Amsterdam Hospital.

She said the team, which was expected in the country on Saturday, will first visit the Port Mourant Hospital and at the Williamsburg Health Centre. Today patients would be treated at the Skeldon Hospital and the Bush Lot Health Centre.
On Wednesday the team will be at the New Amsterdam Hospital and at the Number 53 Health Centre while on Thursday services will be provided at the Mibicuri Hospital in Black Bush Polder and at the Number 63 Health Centre.

On Friday, the team closes off with a Family Health Clinic at the New Amsterdam Hospital. According to Trim a team of nurses and health educators will conduct lectures at the hospital for two hours from Monday to Friday.

There will be a community forum on cancer dealing with the topics: breast self-examination and signs as well as prostate cancer.

She also said that the team plans to continue working in Berbice and recalled that the last visit was three years ago. During that visit, the team worked with doctors in Georgetown and conducted lectures to over 300 nurses. There was also a cancer walk.
