Some New Amsterdam vendors have moved into a “white elephant” bus terminal, which the town council had begun constructing on the stelling road in 2001, but had left unfinished following a court order prohibiting work on the structure.

The vendors who had been selling in other areas of New Amsterdam, see their current location at Matthew Allen Road as an “ideal spot” as they are off the road and are protected from the elements.

New Amsterdam Mayor Claude Henry said the project was on stream until the owners of Avinash Store nearby claimed that the land belonged to them and applied for an injunction, which was granted.

Many persons had been anxious about the completion of the bus terminal and even said they would have been willing to assist once the council got the go-ahead. They had also suggested that the building be used as a canteen to generate funds to aid in the development of the town.

The project came about after the twinning of New Amsterdam and Midland, Texas and had already cost $1 million. A lot more money was also needed for the completion.

The Christmas in April organization of America had provided funding as well as the town council, well-wishers and other key stakeholders such as Banks DIH Limited.
