A teenager, who admitted to stealing money and a cellular phone to the value of $100,000 was sentenced to two years imprisonment, when he appeared at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Patrick Coats, 18, of 15 Plantain Walk, West Bank Demerara admitted to the charge of simple larceny and was sentenced to two years imprisonment by the magistrate. The facts on the case state that on Monday at Vreed-en-Hoop, Coats stole $40,000 and a cellular phone valued at $60,000, the property of Sohan Bisesar.

The court was told that on that day, Coats approached Bisesar, who operates a vegetable stall opposite the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry, and begged for two ripe plantains to eat. Bisesar was serving another customer at the time and Coats was told to wait. However, he grabbed a box that contained the cash and the cellular phone and escaped. The matter was reported to the police and the teenager was arrested and charged.

He admitted to the offence in court and was handed the sentence.
