A 56-year-old Guyanese woman was found dead in her Schenectady, New York apartment on Saturday afternoon and police are treating the incident as a homicide.

According to a report in the Schenectady Daily Gazette, Jaiwanti Mangar was discovered on the floor of her apartment at 402 Division Street around 2:45 pm on Saturday afternoon. She was discovered by a relative who called the police.

Meanwhile a report from New York’s News Channel 13 said that an autopsy was scheduled for yesterday morning for the mother of three who moved to Schenectady four years ago.

Relatives and neighbours have expressed shock and disbelief that anyone would want to harm the woman. One relative, Ramesh Somware told Channel 13 that Mangar was a very hard working person. “I know she’s doing two jobs presently.”

Somware also said that Mangar’s husband was in Guyana at the time of her death.
