Festival last weekend, taking the first prize in the ‘Most Catch Category’ — their catch weighed in at 32 lbs — and in the ‘Lukanani Category’ with 6 lbs.

Thomas Daniels came in second in the ‘Most Catch Category’ with 12 lbs and he tied with Richmond Lambert for the second place in the ‘Lukanani Category’, both with 4 lbs. Lambert took the first prize for the ‘Arawana Category’ — he was the lone catcher of the rare fish — and third place in the ‘Lukanani Category’.

Several others who went to the area overnight for the festival came out with very large catches, but said they went for the fun and did not register for the competition.

The festival ran for two days — Saturday and Sunday — an expansion of the previous one-day event. The event drew large support from Rockstone and surrounding communities and from across Guyana. The two days were filled with exciting events including fishing competitions, fish-cooking contests, and kayaking contests.

In May 2002, Rockstone was featured on the cover of the National Geographic Explorer magazine as a top fishing destination in the world. Rockstone is located approximately 18 miles from Mackenzie, Linden, and is renowned as a fishing community where the waters are teeming with several varieties of fish, including Haimara, Arawana, Lukanani (Bass), Hassar, Pirai, Tiger Fish and Arapaima.
