Boyfriend questioned

The boyfriend of the late Anjanie Mahdoo, whose partly decomposed body was found on Wednesday morning in a canal at Cherry Field, LBI, has been taken into police custody relatives of the deceased told Stabroek News.   According to family members, the boyfriend, who resides at Success, is currently being detained at the Beterverwagting Police Station.

Police are still conducting their investigations and are awaiting the results of the post-mortem examination, which is scheduled for today.

Although, there were reportedly no marks of violence about the dead woman’s body, the family members are certain that foul play was involved. They are pleased that the boyfriend has been detained since they are convinced that he had something to do with the death of Mahdoo, who was also known as “Pinky”.

The body of the 29-year-old resident of Fifth Street, Alexander Village was found in a canal on Tuesday morning by a group of sugar workers.  Her body was found with her head face-down at the side of the canal and she was wearing a multi-coloured top and a pair of black pants. She was reportedly missing since Monday evening after she and a co-worker parted ways after going shopping for footwear.

Meanwhile, when Stabroek News returned to the scene where Mahdoo’s body was found, the residents were still stunned by Wednesday’s discovery. Some residents told this newspaper that the area is very bushy and poorly lit and consequently they were not surprised that it was chosen as a place to dispose of bodies.

According to them, the community has also witnessed an upsurge in crime in recent times. They said that on Tuesday evening a gang of eight men from a neighbouring community had attacked two men from the village.

When asked if they noticed any suspicious activity on Tuesday evening, one villager said that shortly after 9:00 pm she observed a white car parked in the vicinity where Mahdoo’s body was found. The person, however, said that she did not take note since persons – especially couples – would frequently visit that area in vehicles when they wanted privacy.

A few of the residents lamented the fact that the police patrol no longer traverses the area and called for this to be resumed. They also made a plea for the authorities to provide adequate street lights in the area, since this may help to reduce the recent upsurge of crime in the village.
