David de Caires cremated in Barbados

Stabroek News’ Editor-in-Chief David de Caires was cremated yesterday following a simple but moving service of praise and thanksgiving at the Chapel of Coral Ridge Memorial Gardens at the Ridge, Christ Church in Barbados.

His cousin Christopher de Caires gave a moving appreciation in which he recalled that de Caires was the quintessential family man – not just to his children but to the entire de Caires clan. He said his cousin was perhaps a ‘media mogul’ but never saw himself that way as he was simply a down-to-earth man on a quest for the truth.

Pall bearers included de Caires’s son, Brendan; his son-in-law Michael Atherton, other relatives and close friends Miles Fitzpatrick and Major General (rtd) Joe Singh. The service was conducted by Fr Campbell Johnson and the reading done by Stabroek News Assistant Editor, Cheryl Springer. Michelle Saywack, the daughter of the late Martin Carter, read her father’s poem “After One Year”.
His ashes will be returned to Guyana for a memorial service tomorrow at the Brickdam Cathedral.
