Woman shot, injured allegedly by ex-boyfriend

A 22-year-old West Demerara woman is nursing a gunshot wound to the breast, which was reportedly inflicted by an ex-boyfriend last evening.

Up to press time last night, Sophia Pitman was at the Georgetown Public Hospital where doctors had stabilised her and were draining fluid from her chest after which she was scheduled to be taken to the operating theatre for surgery to remove the bullet. The ex-boyfriend was still on the run.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting are unclear but Stabroek News was told that woman arrived at the medical institution around 8.20 pm with a single gunshot wound to the right-side breast. The incident occurred on North Road in the vicinity of Orange Walk, this newspaper was told.

Speaking to this newspaper last evening the woman’s mother Rosalyn John said she received a call from a doctor who told her that her daughter had been shot.

She said when she arrived at the hospital, Pitman was conscious and taking oxygen but she was unable to speak. As a result, the mother said, she was not sure exactly what had transpired. However, the woman said, after the doctors had stabilized her daughter, Pitman was able to tell the police who had carried out the act. John said she was clueless as to what might have led to it, as she was unaware of any problems the two might have had.
She said that her daughter had moved on and had recently started living with another man at West Demerara.
Police are investigating the matter.
