One of the men held for questioning in the fatal stabbing of foreman Latchman Persaud has been released.
A relative told this newspaper that the man was released on Tuesday, a day after he turned himself in at the Sparendaam Police Station.

A second man, who was held on Tuesday, was still in custody up to press time last evening, assisting the police with their investigation. Both men are residents of Better Hope, East Coast Demerara, where Persaud, 23, called ‘Boyo,’ had also lived and where Sunday night’s fatal stabbing took place.

Meanwhile, a post-mortem examination conducted yesterday revealed that it was a stab to the heart that ended Persaud’s life. He also had multiple stab wounds to his body.

Persaud’s relatives are making arrangements for a burial on Saturday.
According to the police, Persaud was at home on Sunday night but left shortly after receiving a telephone call.
He was later heard shouting for help and was discovered in front of his residence with stab wounds to the body.

He was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
A knife, suspected to have been used in the attack, was recovered at the scene by the police.
Relatives told Stabroek News that jealousy over Persaud’s recent promotion to the post of foreman was what led to the tragedy.

They said two villagers, including the former foreman, made life difficult for Persaud since his promotion.
