Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday placed a senior citizen on $75,000 bail after he allegedly stole over $700,000 worth of items from Toolsie Persaud Limited (TPL).

Roy Chapman, 60, of 58 Front Road, Ruimveldt, Georgetown pleaded not guilty to the charge of simple larceny when it was read to him.

It is alleged that on November 24 at Lombard Street, Georgetown, Chapman stole 26 rolls of electrical cable valued $693,680 and one clock worth $11,425; a total value of $705,105, property of TPL.

Chapman’s attorney told the court that his client was innocent and that it was a case of mistaken identity.
The lawyer said his client was just a passerby at the time of the incident.

The prosecution did not object to bail but told the court that the items were recovered in the possession of the accused and were now in police custody.

The accused was granted $75,000 bail and the matter continues on January 23 in Court Three.
