The Environmental Protec-tion Agency (EPA) and the National Parks Commission have signed a $24M agreement for the construction of a rest house and warden building at the Kaieteur National Park.

According to a press release, the park currently boasts a guest house at Kaieteur Top that can accommodate 10 persons. The new rest house is intended to provide additional rooms and hammock accommodation for 20 over-land visitors and, along with the warden lodgings, it will be built at Tukeit along the Potaro River of the Kaieteur Gorge. Meanwhile, the warden station would provide housing for park wardens engaged in monitoring at Tukeit. The agreement was signed on November 12

According to the release, the project was made possible by the German government through the KfW Small Grants Component of the Guyana Protected Areas System Project. It is being implemented by the EPA with assistance from the GFA Consultancy Firm. The rest house will be built by Project Design and Construction Company over an eight-month period.  Recently KfW funded two other projects for the park which provided field kits for the park wardens and a boat and engine for Waratuk to boost monitoring activities in the park.

The Park was established in 1929 and today covers an area of 627 square kilometres or 242 square miles. It is known for its rich biodiversity and the majestic Kaieteur Falls.
