-driver tries to escape
A 15-year-old cyclist died after being hit by a tractor on the Number Two Public Road, East Canje, Berbice yesterday afternoon.

Dead is Samuel Amsterdam, of Victoria Street, Cumberland Village, Canje. Police, in a press release said the accident occurred around 4.30 pm yesterday. The police said investigations revealed that a tractor with a low-bed trailer attached was travelling along the roadway when “it is reported that Amsterdam rode out of a side street on a bicycle into the vehicle and was struck down.”

His mother, Delcina New-Year told Stabroek News that her son was going to visit his uncle at New Amsterdam at the time. The grieving woman stated that Amsterdam was also accompanied by another youth and it was that boy, who returned to inform her of her son’s death. New-Year said that she was told that the incident happened at a turn in the road and her son was hit by an “estate tractor” and “he dead on the spot.”

She declared that she was told that her older son and other persons, who gathered at the scene, had to prevent the driver from driving away. Amsterdam was taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The teenager had attended the Cumberland Primary School but left about a year ago and had found work at a car wash.

He leaves to mourn his parents, four brothers and four sisters.
The driver of the tractor was taken into police custody.
