Teachers urge to lead by example

Teachers were advised to model behaviours and attitudes they want their students to adopt, at the third prize giving ceremony of the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE) Vreed-en-Hoop branch.

According to a press release from the Region Three Administration Office CPCE Principal Myrtle Fanfair said “teachers must be mindful of what they do in the classroom because children learn what they live… and if you treat them with kindness and consideration they will learn to respect you.” She emphasised that it is also important that they consider the interests of each child adding, “Even though the interests may vary, you should be honest and fair in your dealing.”

Fanfair said trained teachers have “just climbed the first rung of the ladder in their academic career” and she urged the successful graduates to continue to read and to make reading a habit. She also said dress code, regular and punctual attendance are key requirements of the profession.

Additionally, Head of the Vreed-en-Hoop Centre Berchel Montague said nine teachers were successful at the secondary academic programme, 19 at the primary level and nine at the Early Childhood Programme. He said these passes represent 82%, 83% and 64% respectively for the academic period 2005-2008.

Meanwhile, Regional Chairman Julius Faerber congratulated the graduates and advised them that learning is an ongoing process. He also urged them to continue their education at the university level. Faerber said too government will soon reveal a five-year strategic plan for education and it has over the years spent large sums to enhance the teaching and learning environment.

According to the release Regional Education Officer Marilyn Jones-O’Donough, head teachers, teachers and parents attended the ceremony. It was hosted at the Vreed-en-Hoop Community High School.
