No compensation paid over pit latrine death

As far as he is aware no compensation has been paid to the relatives of drowned schoolgirl, Tenesha De Souza, Minister of Education, Shaik Baksh says.

De Souza had died after drowning in a pit latrine at her school, the Santa Rosa Primary School in Moruca, North West District several months ago. Responding orally to a question posed by Member of Parliament, Raphael Trotman during Wednesday’s session of the National Assembly, Baksh said that the issue of compensation has not been considered nor is it under consideration.

He declared that there is no need to review the policy of providing flush toilets to all schools as the Ministry and the Regional Administrations have been building sanitary blocks with flush toilets on an ongoing basis. He asserted that the ministry will continue to promote the building of flush toilets but this will depend on financial resources, availability of water supply and topographic factors.
