Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson remanded to prison a 20-year-old man, who allegedly broke and entered the home of another man and stole a number of items and cash, when he appeared before her yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Shazad Bacchus of 1314 Tuschen, New Scheme, East Bank Essequibo, pleaded not guilty to the charge of break and enter and larceny.

It is alleged that on December 3 at Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo, he broke and entered the dwelling house of Khemraj Kissoon and stole a CD player, a DVD player, a television set, a gold chain and a quantity of cash totalling $282,000.

The prosecution objected to Bacchus’s bail application on the grounds that he was previously released from prison for attempting to commit a felony and if granted bail he might continue to commit offences of a similar nature.

However, Bacchus stated that on the day in question he was on his way home when he saw a few policemen and said goodnight to them. He said that shortly after that he went into a shop and the same policemen followed him, held onto him and took him to Leonora Police Station where they tortured him. “They cuff me in meh belly and they tek a candle and bun me,” he told the court.

The magistrate subsequently ordered that Bacchus be remanded to prison and transferred the case to Leonora Magistrate’s Court for December 30.
