Lashing waves during yesterday morning’s high tide caused the guidance strip of a koker at La Jalousie, West Coast Demerara to give way. A temporary replacement also failed late yesterday and it was being examined last evening.

The guidance strip is the part of the koker that holds it in place, when the koker door closes. Yesterday’s incident saw some amount of water forcing it’s way through but shortly after the incident late yesterday, the tide had begun to fall. Additionally, a pump at the koker at Windsor Forest was down and efforts were being made to fix it last night.

Water that had accumulated in various communities on the West Demerara was receding, Region Three Chairman, Julius Faerber told Stabroek News. However, sections of the Canal Polders still had water on the land. The water level in the Boerasirie Conservancy had risen too and yesterday was up to 62GD (Georgetown Datum). The conservancy has a water holding capacity of 62.5GD. Faerber said that monitoring was ongoing on a 24-hour basis.

Meanwhile, more rain has been forecasted in the coming days.
