Bystander accidentally shot in prisoner’s escape bid

A bystander was accidentally shot yesterday after a policeman discharged a round at a remand prisoner as he was attempting to escape from the Mahaica Magistrate’s Court. Prince Cort of Jonestown, Mahaica was treated at the Georgetown Hospital while the prisoner, Rupert Brown who is on charges of robbery under arms and break and enter and larceny was recaptured. Police in a release yesterday said that about 11:15 am while standing before Magistrate Haymant Ramdhani, Brown made a dash from the court room, pushing down a policeman in the process. He then jumped over the banister of the stairway onto the ground and ran out of the compound. An armed policeman who was on duty discharged a round at him which accidentally grazed Cort on the left arm. The prisoner was pursued and recaptured by other ranks. Cort was taken to the hospital where he was treated and sent away.
