Two farmers, one who allegedly wounded a woman, and the other who is accused of indecently assaulting her, were both granted bail yesterday when they appeared before Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Peter Moses, 34, a father of four, of Essequibo pleaded not guilty to the charge of unlawful wounding. It is alleged that on December 4 he unlawfully and maliciously wounded the woman.
Meanwhile, John Lewis, 56, a father of eleven, also of Essequibo pleaded not guilty to the charge of indecent assault. It is alleged that on December 3 in Essequibo Lewis indecently assaulted the woman.

However, attorney-at-law Nigel Hughes stated that neither Moses nor Lewis had any criminal record. He also stated that the complainant “is what you classify as a ‘coastlander’ with money.” The defence attorney then applied for reasonable bail stating that the area in which the two men were living is a very humble one and they would not be able to pay a large bail.

The magistrate subsequently placed Moses on bail in the sum of $50,000 while Lewis was granted $40,000 bail. The magistrate then transferred the case to the Lethem Magistrate’s Court for March 3.
