Several government officials recognised some senior citizens from Enterprise, Enmore and Lusignan for their contribution to development at their annual Christmas parties.

According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release Prime Minister Samuel Hinds and former President Janet Jagan were among those who attended the parties held at the Enterprise Primary School and the Lusignan Community Centre.

Hinds told the groups that their struggles had not been in vain; pointing out how the communities had been transformed. He said he was impressed by the improvements in the communities.  Hinds also said Guyana was taking steps to mitigate the effects of the global economic problems. He then pointed out that the country had made it through more difficult times.

Meanwhile, Mrs Jagan said citizens should feel proud of their struggles and achievements in making the country a better place. Mrs Jagan collected an award on behalf of Executive Director of Food for the Poor Leon Davis for the organization’s contribution to community development.

Additionally, the prime minister presented an award to President of the Enterprise PPP group David Sattaur. Hinds also distributed hampers to relatives of the victims of the killings at Lusignan where 11 persons were murdered.

According to GINA, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr Frank Anthony, Minister within the Ministry of Health Dr Bheri Ramsaran, PPP/C General Secretary Donald Ramotar and other officials also attended the functions.
